NSF Funded Engineering Research Center for Structured Organic Particulate Systems (C-SOPS) REU Program

C-SOPSThe Engineering Research Center for Structured Organic Particulate Systems (C-SOPS) brings together a cross-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists as well as industry leaders to improve the way pharmaceuticals, foods and agriculture products are manufactured. C-SOPS will focus on advancing the scientific foundation for the optimal design of SOPS with advanced functionality while developing the methodologies for their active control and manufacturing. The main objective of this program is to provide opportunities for undergraduate students to work with university faculty on innovative, relevant, discovery-based projects. The students work under the guidance of the faculty, post-docs, and graduate students. The students also work side by side with the high school teachers (RET program) and help the post doc in training the teachers which gives them mentorship opportunity.

The undergraduate students were assigned short projects for duration of six weeks. The students were given the necessary training by their mentors (either the graduate students or the post docs) before start of the projects. At the end of the six week period the students were asked to prepare a PowerPoint presentation to assess their understanding of the project. Few of these students were also able to contribute towards journal articles.
