Temporary Laboratory Assistant/Technician (Biochemistry) Position Available

Center for Injury Biomechanics, Materials and Medicine (CIBM3)

POSITION SUMMARY:

We are looking for a qualified, motivated and accountable Lab Technician to perform a variety of biochemical/cell biology procedures. This is a research support position in the Center for Injury Biomechanics, Materials and Medicine (CIBM3) at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), part of the Institute for Brain and Neuroscience Research (IBNR). The CIBM3 is primarily focused on traumatic brain injury (TBI) including the biomechanics of trauma to neurological outcome.  The candidate will work full time in a biomechanics and neuroscience laboratory and will be involved in the day-to-day operation and handing of sensitive equipment. The ideal candidate should demonstrate good work ethics and have experience to work independently as well as in a team to perform a variety of biological and biochemical assays in vivo using rodents as well as in vitro using neural cell/slice cultures. This position will also require the ability to manage laboratory personnel, work with students at all levels, and communicate with facilities management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS TO PERFORM:

  • Routine biochemical laboratory techniques
  • Small animal surgery procedures
  • Rodent behavioral studies
  • Organize and store all chemicals substances, fluids and compressed gases according to safety instructions
  • Record all data and results in specified forms (paper and electronic) with accuracy and responsibility
  • Maintain equipment and assist in ordering laboratory supplies
  • Ensure that all safety guidelines are followed strictly at all times and maintain a clean and orderly environment
  • Develop, analyze and present research reports to directors.

 

SKILLS

  • Quantitative Western blots, ELISA, Q-RT-PCR
  • Brain tissue sectioning (vibratome/cryostat) and mounting
  • Immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence studies
  • Confocal microscopy/digital pathology scanners
  • Animal surgery including stereotaxi, transcardial perfusion, intracerebral injections
  • Neural cell cultures, hippocampal slice cultures
  • Microsoft Office, statistical tools, graph pad software
  • Using data acquisition hardware

 

PREREQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS/MS degree in biochemistry/cell biology or related fields. Knowledge in neurobiology is advantageous.
  • Effective communication and writing skills.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to the changing needs of the team.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
