Project Timeline

Phase 1 – Months 1-9 (phase currently ongoing)
The objective of phase 1 is to complete the development of the passive arm support by Talem Technologies.  This phase will include feasibility testing and gathering user input to improve the design of the passive arm support and its components.

Phase 2 – Months 7-9 (phase currently ongoing)
The objective of phase 2 is to announce the study to the DMD community, open enrollment and accept applications for participation in the study, evaluate applicants based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and select the 30 individuals who will participate in the study.

Phase 3 – Months 9-14
The objective of phase 3 is to outfit the 30 selected participants with the passive arm supports.  The researchers will travel to each user’s home to mount the devices on their wheelchairs, train them on use of the device, and collect data for the study.

Phase 4 – Months 1-12 (phase currently ongoing)
The objective of phase 4 is to complete the development of the vertical assist (admittance control) module that will motorize the existing passive arm supports.

Phase 5 – Months 12-15
The objective of phase 5 is to conduct feasibility testing and gather user input to improve the design and implementation of the vertical assist module that will motorize the existing passive arm supports.

Phase 6 – Months 16-21
The objective of phase 6 is to visit each of the 30 users of the passive arm support and outfit their devices with the vertical assist module so their existing device will provide motorized assistance in the vertical direction and remain passive in horizontal movements.  Data will be collected at this home visit.

Phase 7 – Months 22-24
The objective of phase 7 is to conduct in-home follow up visits with each user to gather user feedback, assess device performance and functionality, and monitor user functionality.  Data will be collected at this home visit.
