The mission of Microelectronics Fabrication Center (MFC) consists in:
- Educate NJIT students and train young engineers in advanced nano- and micro-fabrication technology and design of micro-devices with applications in microfluidics, biomedical sensors, actuators, and drug delivery systems, micro-chemical reactors, and application specific integrated circuits (ASIC)
- Conduct research in micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), nonlinear optical and elastic phenomena in dispersive media, ion-conducting ceramics, advanced semiconductor, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric materials
- Cooperate with industry in join projects for developing innovative technologies, systems, and devices with applications in the healthcare, telecommunication, chemical, and electronic industry
More than 100 NJIT graduate students form ECE, Physics, ME, CES, and BME have been trained by the MFC staff in the ISO-4 (Class-10) Cleanroom laboratory for their MSc and PhD research projects in the past 10 years. Undergraduate classes in nano-fabrication (BME) thin-film technologies (Physics) are taught in the Cleanroom. Graduate students form NJIT, Rutgers University, Columbia University, Stevens Institute of Technology, and Princeton University have used the Cleanroom for their research projects.
The Microelectronic fabrication Center’s staff and facilities have been involved in major NJIT R & D projects as “Child-safe Weapons Technology”and “Programmable MEMS Shunt Wave for Hydrocephalus Treatment” as well as in numerous projects and research grants led by ME, ECE, CES, Physics, and BME departments. MFC together with BME has organized a BioMEMS Summer Bioengineering Institute - a jointly funded program by NSF and NIH.
MFC has served more than 70 companies among witch are: Lucent Technologies, Hewlett Packard, Dupont, Allied-Signal, AT&T, BF Goodrich, Corning, Amkor Electronics, Motorola, David Sarnoff, Sony.
The MFC staff main goal is to use micro-fabrication to achieve macro-results.
