Welcome

BioSensor Materials for Advanced Research & Technology (BioSMART Center) is an interdisciplinary research laboratory that seeks to understand the mechanisms of how chemical information is transformed from one interface to another, and to use that knowledge to develop innovative sensing technologies, functional materials, and environmental devices.

Biosensor devices consist of a biological recognition system (such as an proteins, RNA, dsDNA, viruses, carbohydrates, lipids, tissues, and cells) in conjunction with a physicochemical transducer, which converts biological recognition event into an electronic signal. Biosensors possess several characteristics that make them comparable or even better than traditional analytical systems. They must be simple to handle, small, cheap and able to provide reliable information in real-time. The exceptional combination of a biological element in direct contact with a physical transducer makes it possible to fulfill all these requirements.
